Wine Documentary

Zucco, the Wine of the Son of the French King

A documentary, directed by the wine expert as well as filmmaker Lidia Rizzo, that tells the story of one of the most prominent and historic wine states from Italy.

Released: 2012
Running Time: 60 mins

When exiled from France, the Duke of Aumale settled in Sicily where he applied the agricultural precepts of Virgil. Who would have imagined that the great chef Vatel’s closely-guarded secret of Chantilly cream would lead to the discovery of the long-lost secret of le vin de Zucco?
The Duke’s famously pure wines are no longer produced, but the Zucco farm still exudes the charm of its incredible, romantic history.
What brought the richest man of the late eighteenth century to die in a province in the depths of southern Italy?

Through revealing interviews with historians, enologists, and inhabitants from the area, the director delivers a compelling tale of the rise and fall of the Zucco wines, which became famous for their purity compared to the Maderas, which used to be drunk at that time.
